Not only in Belgium but also on a European level a lot is happing in the combat against human trafficking. A first instrument is the treaty approved by the Council of Europe on May 3rd 2003. This Treaty focuses on all forms of human trafficking, national as well as international and whether or not it is related to organised crime.
In 2003 the Member States of the OSC drafted an “action plan for combating human trafficking”.
On a higher level the United Nations edited a Treaty with respect to internationally organised crime followed by a protocol focussing on human and women trade intended to prevent and combat human trafficking. Crucial is the fact that the nations who ratified the protocol have to conform their legislation and procedures.
